Public Safety

contact voltage

Every day and in every municipality in North America, the public are in contact with devices that either use, encase or conduct electricity. One of the more prevalent installations in public locations is that of streetlighting and traffic control equipment. Over the past few years in other jurisdictions, several people and their pets have come in contact with this type of equipment that has become unintentionally charged by failing equipment. Results range from simple ‘tingle shocks’ to the death of pets.

Working closely with the City of Woodstock engineering department and Power Survey Company (New Jersey, U.S.) Woodstock Hydro completed a full city-wide contact voltage scan to ensure this type of failure is not present on our City streets.

The results proved very positive and provided a baseline with which we can go forward to enact preventive maintenance activities, but more importantly, confirmed that the streets of Woodstock are safe from an electrical safety perspective.

Press coverage of these results can be found at the following Internet site.
